2012 Soul Train Awards: Looks That Worked and a Few That DIDN'T

So the Soul Train Awards took place last week at none other than Planet Hollywood (my humble abode for my upcoming Vegas trip, by the way hehe) in fabulous Las Vegas. Celebs were out and ready to be charmed by the sounds of authentic R&B music. Of course, where there are camera and paparazzi, there are Glam Girls. =) Glam Girls were out in full affect with some major 'Aha look' moments, and a few of those dreaded 'Huh?' moments... Lets look back at a few looks that worked and some of those that didn't:

Estelle
I'm going to go ahead and say that Estelle actually got it right this time. I think that she finally chose a dress that was right for her body and one that complimented her deep skin complexion. Things that work about this dress would definitely include the lace detailing and the asymmetrical shoulder affect. The red lip and necklace made a statement, while the caged bootie simply stood second. I like. ;-)

Claudia Jordan
Claudia Jordan (Celebrity Apprentice, actress) showed up and showed out this year at the Soul Train Awards. She rocked a one shoulder green dress, paired with a perfect pink pout. I think the high ponytail and dangling earrings definitely pulled this look together to make it STA appropriate and not a bore fest. I love it.

Kimberly Walker
Kimberly Walker has made quite the transformation from being the once Detroit area radio personality to the now host of BET's 106 and Park. Having never understood the choice for BET to add sooooo many dag-on hosts, I think I now have an understanding for why Kim was chosen! She rocked this dress! The dress featured a leather-like arm, with color blocking along the front. Her bangs and slightly curled tresses definitely made this look a hit. I would have to give her second in line on this one. Way to go Kim! =)

Demetria McKinney
Speaking of color blocking... Demetria McKinney, probably most commonly known as Janine Payne from House of Payne, was looking good on the red carpet. I think her DRESS fit well and the design was definitely a hit. Her hair, for ME, doesn't work. I think that the bangs added a bit too much height for this look and actually made her look like someone TOTALLY DIFFERENT. Had she thrown in a pair of hoop earrings, the hair probably would have worked. I would have judged this look ahead of Kimberly's if it weren't for the bangs. So for now, I'm just letting her sit in second place but I think Kim has this one in the bag.

Keyshia Cole
Honeyyyy, child, babyyyy!!! Miss Keyshia is back! I have never been a real Keyshia Cole STYLE fan BUT she definitely carries the title for my best dressed Glam Girl at the STAs. I mean seriously, this look is sick! Keyshia rocked this asymmetrical black dress (not sure if it was jersey of chiffon) which was paired with an amazing platform, embellished pump. She was smart not to show too much skin up top with all the leg she had going on. So just a subtle peek from the waistline and a tiny bit of shoulder and arm spoke a language of perfection to me. The shoe was everything! The dress was EVERYTHING! The nude lip and lightly tossed back hair was just the icing on the cake! I think miss Keyshia finally got it right! I LOVE THIS LOOK!

Lil Mama
Awwww man! :-( I'm sooo sad to report this look because I think it ALMOST worked for Lil Mama. I want Lil Mama to find something (anything) that works sometime soon, please. I've been trying to throw her a bone here. LOL. Ok, so this look just didn't come together for me. The dress is pretty. Her hair was ok. Her makeup was- blah. But the absolute worse part for me was this bracelet, slip thingy she had on her hand. What was that? I mean, I know that the hand chains are totally on trend. I get that. BUT, you don't EVER force something like that onto such an elegant dress. It's almost like an insult to the fabric of the gown. I'm extremely disappointed because I think that had it not been for the hand chain, Lil Mama's look may have actually worked, somewhat.

Fantasia
Fantasia graced the carpets wearing a very, very fitted black dress. Umm, yeah. About that fit... It didn't work for me. I think she looks stuffed into the dress. Maybe if she had gone up a size and skipped the black sheer STOCKINGS she wore, this poor look may have stood a chance! But, this night, it didn't! On top of that, she rocked a lined lip with some sort of sheer gloss. No! Not a hit. Total MISS here Fantasia!

Melanie Fiona
Sigh. Melanie Fiona. Umm, lets just say that she USUALLY gets it right. Every one is entitled to a miss or two, I guess. She showed up in a white lace dress, with barely any lining. The lining on the dress stopped right before her Hello Kitty, which just doesn't work. Point. Blank. Period. Plus, the lip and hair was a mess with this dress. It was like a discounted sexy vampire costume on bath salts. NOT a HIT!

MC Lyte
MC Lyte showed up on the scene with one too many fabrics and a forced pop of color. Need I say more? FAIL.

Tamar Braxton
Ok, I know that the caption says this is Tamar. But I refuse to believe that this is HER as she would say. LOL. What, Tamar? Ok, so the metallic fabric, I liked. I think that the neckline of the dress kind of didn't match the fit. It was just too much bulk, all over. And HER hair just didn't give me life. In fact, it gave me heart burn. I didn't like it. I think it was bad. Real bad.

Kat Graham
Speaking of BAD... Umm, Kat Graham is taking this worst dressed look contest HANDS DOWN. I mean, really? The dress was all about the split, yet this floral print was competing for main event. Then, she has this big hair trying to steal runner up, while the strap on her shoe is fighting back. There are just too many things to look at in this look. You want to focus on the split, because, well, its there. But then your eyes travel around the print of the dress and stumble upon this horrific shoe choice. I just HATE this look.

That's it Glam Girls. I'm signing out.
Xoxo,
Ty
